The Repatriation of Julia Pastrana
Transdisciplinary/Transnational Social Art Practice

After nearly 10 years of efforts, in February 2013, at the University of Oslo, Norway, custody of Julia Pastrana was transferred to Mexican officials; I represented Mexico. After more than 150 years of being exhibited because of her unique physical condition, Ms. Pastrana (1834-1860) was repatriated to Mexico and buried in Sinaloa, Mexico on the 12th of February 2013.

I was not the first person to request the burial of Julia Pastrana and have often asked myself, why was I able to succeed? Why did the other efforts fail? What did I do differently? I am an artist and therefore my methodology was radically different from all others from the start. My extensive collaborative artistic exchange community experiences in Mexico, Venezuela and Trinidad prepared me for a project of this magnitude that ultimately involved International Institutions, Government officials, various organizations and scientists.

This talk will explore in greater detail these issues.
